    🚘 Scenic Route

Taking Route 1? It’s cute, but be ready for some stop-and-go action. Want to zip up faster? Hop on I-95—but fair warning, Maine loves a toll booth! Either way, you’re cruising through Vacationland, so vibes are high.

    āø»

    • Parking: Small lot with a per-person fee during the season. If it’s full, don’t panic—spots turn over pretty fast!

    • Restrooms: Composting toilet—nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

    🄾 The Hike

This isn’t a wild summit chase—it’s more of a peaceful stretch-your-legs stroll with ocean air and views of Casco Bay. Perfect after a long drive.

Wander the wooded path around the island’s edge, pop down to the rocky shoreline, or just pick a bench and soak it all in. Casco Bay is out there looking majestic!

Don’t miss the whimsical fairy house village—yes, really. Channel your inner gnome and build your own little home using natures supplies. It’s charming, quirky, and totally Maine.

    Our fairy house šŸ–¤šŸ§š

There’s even a pet cemetery, part of the original island donation. The rest of the land is home to the Baxter School for the Deaf—thank you for sharing this special spot šŸ™.

    The HikešŸ–¤šŸ„¾

This trail is a mellow out-and-back with a steady, manageable incline—great for chatting, snapping pics, or just enjoying a peaceful walk in the woods. Wide paths make it easy to hike side-by-side.

You’ll pass a few offshoots with views of the brook trickling downhill. Right before the trail peaks, look for a wooden sign and take a right. The path curves gently and leads to the waterfall.

    The Trek šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¾

Second try was the winner—and Bre’s pups got to join the fun this time! 🐶🐾 On our first attempt, there was just too much snow and water to cross over to the other side of the falls.

On the way in, there’s an awesome rock formation on the right that’s worth a quick stop. Take a moment to appreciate nature’s sculpture work!

Trail update—there’s a loop option if you take a right after the first water crossing. A construction company did some grading for power lines. While on this wide road, look to the left for the entrance of the loop trail. It’s a worn down foot path on the left side and it’s not marked. It could even be a game trail, but we used it. Follow the brook and you’ll come out in front of and then on top of the falls.

*Can access this view with loop trail*

Once you reach the falls, definitely try to get across if you can (sometimes that means following the brook further down for other crossing options)— the view from the other side is even better! Enjoy!

    Low water (can cross here)
High water (go further down Brook to cross, use good judgment or get wet)

    🄾 The Trek – 8/10 ⭐

This one’s more of a walk than a hike—nice and easy with some railings along the water. If it’s winter, spikes help, but summer should be a breeze.

    ✨ Highlights:

    🄾 The Trek

Easy, wide paths make for a chill hike. The highlight? Bre’s friend Darcy joined us—her radiant vibes led us right to the Caves Loop. These caves aren’t just fun to explore; the rock formations are wicked cool. šŸ˜ Bonus wildlife sighting: we spotted a porcupine hanging out in a cave. (Don’t worry, we gave it plenty of space. No quill-related injuries here!)

🌟 Caves Rating: 8/10 – Super fun to explore, and the rock formations are next level!

Ps. This was not the cave 🤪

Back on the Robert Frost Trail, we headed for the fire tower. No views from the bottom, so if you want that epic 360° shot, you’ve gotta climb! If heights make your knees weak, maybe admire it from below.

On the way back, we made a key detour to the Roaring Falls Trail—a move we wouldn’t have made without Darcy’s guidance. šŸ™Œ The waterfall stole the show! The lower view was gorgeous, but a quick climb to the upper falls made it even better.

🌟 Waterfall Rating: 9/10 – A perfect cherry on top of an already awesome hike!

This place is all about the sauces. Don’t leave without trying the Carolina sauce—you won’t regret it! While it was solid BBQ, it didn’t quite dethrone our reigning champ, Guerrilla Grill.

    🌟 Food Rating: 7/10 – Good, but not life-changing.

    ✨ Final Thoughts

Mt. Toby is an easygoing adventure with big rewards—cool caves, a fire tower, and a must-see waterfall. If you do one thing, don’t skip the caves or Roaring Falls! And if you see a porcupine, maybe don’t try to pet it.

Springtime hits differently in New England. Up north, the trails are a sloppy, melting mess—sometimes even dangerous. So, what do we do? We pivot to what Leaks from the Peaks… WATERFALLS!

    Go Pro Video by Bre

    āø»

    The Drive šŸš—

If you’re already in the Keene area or not too far, this one’s okay. But if you’re coming from a distance, it’s not worth the drive… EXCEPT for the food. But hold that thought—we’ll get there.

Also, Keene has a lot of roundabouts. So, if you’re feeling indecisive, you could just drive in circles for a bit. šŸš—šŸ’Ø

    Parking & Logistics šŸ…æļø

🚻 No restrooms. And it’s a busy area, so… you do the math.

    āø»

    The Hike – 5/10 ⭐

ā³ Time: ~45 minutes round trip. If you’re short on time or adulting got in the way, this one works. The trail is easy and accessible, with the only real ā€œclimbā€ being the short but fun scramble down the bank to get up close to the waterfall (which is definitely the best part!).

🄾 The Trek: It’s basically a point A to point B walk on an old paved road. There’s still a lot of ice, so spikes are a must!

Not much to see, except for dodging lots of dog poop. Clearly, this is a prime exercise spot for local puppers. šŸ¶šŸ’©

The real adventure? Climbing down to the falls. We did stop along the way, because, well… when life throws you a hole, sometimes you just get in. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø A new meaning to postholing? Maybe.

šŸ“ More Waterfalls? This one’s listed in New England Waterfalls by Greg Parsons & Kate B. Watson if you want to see what else is out there. Spoiler: There are better falls, we assure you. We tried to hit another one nearby, but the snow hadn’t melted enough. Stay tuned for that!

    āø»

    The Waterfall – 7/10 ⭐

šŸ’¦ When it’s flowing, it’s actually pretty nice! We climbed down the bank to get a closer look, which made the trip more worth it. If you’re here when the water’s moving, it’s a solid little stop. Otherwise? Meh.

    āø»

    Post-Hike Eats – 10/10 ⭐

šŸ”„ Guerrilla Grill – THESE BROTHERS KNOW THEIR BBQ. šŸ”„

Right off the bat, the staff was super friendly from start to finish. We even got to chat with Adam, one of the owners—an obvious foodie, a guy who says ā€œy’all,ā€ and a fellow hiking fan. What’s not to love?

āœ… Shoutout to our server, Abby, for explaining the portion sizes. Otherwise, half of Bre’s fries would’ve mysteriously disappeared.

šŸ’” Chef’s Tip: Adam told us the brisket is served with one lean cut and one fatty cut, unless you request otherwise. Pro move!

Bre’s Order – Mad Cow Wrap & Sweet Potato Fries šŸŒÆšŸ

šŸ”„ Brisket + red pepper jelly, cream cheese, and potato sticks = FLAVOR BOMB.

šŸ”„ The sweet potato fries? Absolute perfection.

    The Drinks- Sweet Tea šŸ¹

šŸ’Æ It’s PERFECT. Just the right amount of sweetness—flavorful, but not a one-way ticket to diabetes.

    āø»

    Final Verdict šŸŽ¤

🄾 The Hike? Meh. 5/10. If you’re in the area, sure, why not. But we wouldn’t go out of our way.

šŸ’¦ The Waterfall? Decent when it’s flowing. 7/10. The scramble down to it was the best part!

šŸ– The Food? šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„ 10/10. If you’re anywhere near Keene, GO HERE. You won’t regret it.

    • ~2 hours up

    • ~1.75 hours down

    Parking:

    Trail Route:

    • Descent: Smith Summit Trail → Monte Rosa → Old Halfway House Trail

The access road for the Old Halfway House Trail is a huge help when hiking in the dark. A few cars did drive up the private road on our way back down—something Bre had never seen in all her years of hiking Monadnock—so keep an eye out!

    āø»

    The Trek

We started at 3:30 AM on a brisk September morning, just as the night was giving way to dawn. Good headlamps are a must! There’s a lot of climbing. No matter how many White Mountain hikes we do, Monadnock is still a booty kicker.

It took us just under two hours to reach the summit, trying to keep sweating to a minimum. We waited about 40 minutes for the sunrise, spread out from a few other groups who had also made the early trek. Some guys brought their Jetboil for sunrise coffee—genius move. If it’s really cold, starting 30 minutes later wouldn’t be the worst idea.

On the way down, heading toward Monte Rosa, we hit a junction where an old-timer passed us and helped us figure out the right trail (because, of course, he wasn’t disoriented like we were). We briefly stopped at Monte Rosa to check out the cool wind dial.

Near the Halfway House, we had what we hope was our first (and not last!) encounter with Larry.

    Who’s Larry?

    We learned that Larry has:

    āœ” Hiked Monadnock for decades

āœ” Red-lined the entire mountain countless times

āœ” Cleared trails (not just Monadnock!) with a tiny hand saw

    With the Hungry Hikers

ā€œMeet Bre & KK: Hiking and Eating Our Way around New Englandā€

Fifteen years ago, we stepped out of college and into snowshoes—for probably less than a mile. Our friendship started in a Physical Therapy Assistant program. Since then, we’ve done everything from Tough Mudder to charity runs, but what really stuck were the trails, the views, and, of course, the food.

    College graduation 2012
    Tough Mudder, Mt. Snow

We’ve gained experience over the years, but we’re not extreme hikers or thru-hikers (even though we are prepared). In the beginning, KK’s dog, Hilo—a loyal Rhodesian Ridgeback—deserved credit for navigating us out of the woods more than once. Now, thank you, AllTrails!

    Mt. Major

We’re gratuitous hikers—we take our time, want a good view for our effort, and, let’s be real, we start thinking about food about halfway through the hike. We usually pick up the pace on the way down, talking about our restaurant order—because, obviously, we checked the menu beforehand.

Now, we want to share what has brought us so much joy over the years on a bigger scale.

    Welch & Dickey

We’ve put together our recent memories, recommendations, and best finds—from where to fuel our bodies beforehand and fill the gas tank to hikes worth the effort, funny moments along the way, the best post-hike eats, and, when we can, places to stay without breaking the bank.

So if you love nature (but don’t need to sleep in the woods), appreciate a good meal, and enjoy a little adventure, you’re in the right place!

    Mt. Watatic

We don’t know if everyone will laugh as much as we do, but we hope you enjoy the journey just the same. šŸ–¤šŸ„¾šŸ½ļø
